Troubles in the Land of Oz
by: Tony R. Garza
Once again our Council of Oz has been dreaming of new ways to stick it
to the taxpayers. In the past month they have proposed to have a
non-issue of fluoride to be placed on the November 7th Presidential
Ballot and also they wanted an extension of term limits.
The Wizard of Oz ( Mayor Peak ) spends more time on bike races and other
meaningless events than he does doing the peoples business. It is no
wonder that the Council is wandering around looking for a pot of gold.
Ever wonder why the streets aren't repaired, why the massive traffic
construction never ends or why there is never a police officer around
when you really need one? Apparently the City Council does not care
about these problems. Their main concern is how to spend your taxpayer
dollars and how to get more.
The City Councilpersons want to get paid more money and for what? They
fail to realize that to serve as a City Council person is to sit as a
Board of Director for the Citizens of San Antonio. Their job is to set
policy and insure that the City Staff is acting in the best interest of
the taxpayers who are the stock holders. Yet day in and day out we see
all kinds of scandals, and abuse of the public trust by City Staff &
what happens? Nothing-- If the Council members need a job then they
should apply for a job with the City. Sitting on the City Council is a
privilege granted by the Citizens & to demand more pay belittles the
position of trust.
I hope that our Council will awaken from their dreams and come down from
OZ and back to the real world. It's time for them to solve the real
problems of our City in instead of creating more problems. It can
happen, just click your heals Council people & say "I want to go Home!"
