Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink?
by: Tony R. Garza
Contrary to popular belief the sky is not falling & we are not running out of
water!
There is enough water in our Edwards Aquifer to last us another 50 years even
if it does not rain again.
And if you have noticed lately we have more water than we can handle.
What we have is a Water Management Problem. We are not protecting our Aquifer
by allowing uncontrolled building over our Recharge area of the Aquifer. We
are not listening to Water experts who advise to build Recharge dams and Re-circulation
systems that are much cheaper than entering into expensive water purchases with
other Water speculators.
We encourage uncontrolled growth and annexation, which further complicates our
water management.
The City Council recently approved a 300 percent water tax hike over the next
5 years to enter the water buying market. With no end in sight it is estimated
that over 1 Billion taxpayer dollars will be used to play Water Monopoly!
We live at the edge of the Sonora Desert our region has always had eccentric
cycles of heat & rainfall shortages. But we are blessed with one of the most
pure and abundant water aquifers in the World.
Our City Council does not want to fight for our rights to our water. Call your
City Council 207-7040 & let them know how you feel!
