Same Sex Marriage, Why All The Fuss?
by: Jason Doyle
If you are considering getting married soon, has the divorce rate in
America come into your mind? It should.
What does this have to do with same-sex marriages? After all, the title
of this piece would indicate that is what the topic deals with.
Here is my point, quite simply, homosexual marriages should be
legalized.
See if you can follow the logic behind this before your morals cloud
your view and you start spouting off about how I'm a flaming liberal
idiot that would bring down society.
I believe in the idea of the most freedom for the most people. We are
faced with the possibility that we could be wrong about gay marriage.
Let's learn from past mistakes and move on. Until recently, committed
gay couples have not had the opportunity to be recognized by the
government as such. July 1st of this year, Vermont enacted a law giving
homosexuals most of the rights the state recognizes for straight
couples.
What makes heterosexuals think they have the monopoly on truly loving
relationships that deserve to be called marriages? I know several
hetero couples that should not be married, but they are allowed the
freedom to make that mistake.
Why are homosexuals not allowed to make the same mistakes? Heterosexuals
aren't getting it right. (If you think that a 50% divorce rate for first
time marriages is successful, go soak your head and lick an electrical
outlet. Maybe that will knock some sense into you.)
Homosexuals are portrayed as Dykes on Bikes, Drag Queens, and NAMBLA.
These are extreme examples of the homosexual community. These groups are
not the majority of the gay community; they are only the most vocal.
Chances are you are working with a homosexual, and don't know it. Yes,
Dr. Laura, homosexuals can be normal people, too.
I think it's time for American society to mature a little more and
recognize that humans can fall in love with the same sex. Homosexuals
are a working part of our melting pot, and should receive the same
benefits and opportunities that their heterosexual counterparts
currently enjoy. Look at it this way; we were the first country on the
globe, to make slavery illegal. Look at how proud this country can be
for making the right decision, first. I think America has benefited from
abolishing slavery. The majority of former slaves settled in America
because they knew how powerful true freedom extended to all can be. Why
can't we realize that same sex marriages could give more freedom to more
people? If being married is such a good and natural thing, why are two
people in love a bad thing, even though they are gay?
Same sex marriages, in reality, are no threat to society. Marriage does
encourage monogamy. There is that other 50% of married couples that are
staying in their first marriage. I think the least we should do is
extend that kind of chance to gay couples.
That's the Soapbox, I'm Jason Doyle.
